DUBLINTIMEMACHINE: This is “Heartbreak Pier” in Cobh. For millions of desperate Irish emigrants, the humble preserved wooden structure was the last piece of Ireland they would set foot on.
Driven by poverty, hunger, and homelessness, the desperate diaspora was cast to the four winds.
They sailed toward America and Australia, and anywhere else they might call a new home. They endured unimaginable danger, sickness, and squalor. Many meeting their tragic end en route, only to be thrown overboard to anonymous watery graves.
Between 1848 and 1950, over 2.5 million people emigrated through Cobh, making Heartbreak Pier a truly melancholy landmark. A last threshold they crossed, leaving their homeland and ancestors bones behind forever.
But this pier isn’t only about despair. It’s also a poignant reminder that although our ancestors left so much behind them, they brought their heritage and their hope with them.
