A wave of generosity has met a GoFundMe initiative established for the husband and two sons of Allison Eichner, a Connecticut woman whose life was tragically cut short last week in Northern Ireland. The devastating incident occurred on June 11, during what was described as her “long-awaited, special trip to Ireland to explore her heritage.”
Hundreds have contributed to the fund for Allison Eichner, who died in a road collision in Bushmills, Co Antrim. The campaign, launched by three of Eichner’s friends, has quickly surpassed $62,000 from over 480 donations, reflecting the profound impact of her loss.
The organizers of the GoFundMe conveyed the “heartbreaking” nature of Eichner’s passing. They fondly remembered her as “truly a beautiful person — inside and out — with a kindness and generosity that radiated through everything she did. She had a gift for making everyone around her feel seen, loved, and truly cared for.”
Eichner was lauded as a “devoted wife” and an “amazing mom,” with her “love for her family limitless, and her greatest joy was being their rock, their safe place, and their biggest cheerleader.” Her unique personality also shone through, with her “quiet sense of humor often caught you off guard — sweet on the surface, with an unexpectedly sharp and hilarious wit, and a wonderfully dirty sense of humor that always made you laugh when you least expected it.”
The tribute continued, highlighting her selfless nature: “She was the person who gave endlessly, never asking for anything in return. Whether it was her time, her love, or just a listening ear over a cup of tea (with gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, of course), Allison was always there.”
Her untimely death during a journey intended for “joy and exploration ended far too soon in an unimaginable tragedy,” the organizers lamented. The funds raised will assist Eichner’s husband and sons with “funeral expenses, immediate needs, and to provide some peace of mind as they begin to find their way forward.” They concluded their heartfelt plea with gratitude: “If you can give, thank you. If you can share, thank you. Most of all, please keep Allison’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your love and support.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that Allison Eichner, an American citizen from Connecticut in her 40s, died following a single-vehicle road traffic collision on the Causeway Road area of Bushmills on June 11. PSNI Detective Inspector Cherith Adair stated that emergency services responded shortly before 12:30 pm, and despite efforts, Ms. Eichner succumbed to her injuries.
A 66-year-old woman, Cathy Stewart, a special needs teacher from Benton, Illinois, was subsequently arrested and charged with causing death by careless driving. She appeared in Coleraine Magistrates’ Court, where details of the incident emerged. A police constable testified that the collision occurred at the front of the Causeway Hotel, involving a grey Ford Transit driven by the defendant. CCTV footage showed the vehicle, after passengers exited, moving forward slowly before suddenly accelerating, striking outdoor furniture and the victim who was seated on a bench. Her brother, who was beside her, managed to jump out of the way.
Stewart reportedly told police she believed she had turned the car off and, in attempting to apply the foot brake as it rolled, mistakenly hit the accelerator. The defense lawyer described it as a “tragic, tragic case” and a “simple error,” with Stewart expressing profound remorse, stating, “I’m just devastated, I can’t get that family out of my mind. I’m the person who protects, to know that someone lost their life is devastating.” Stewart was granted bail under various conditions, including a £5,000 cash surety, with the case not expected to be heard until 2026 at the earliest.
