Dr Sinead Murphy, a hospital consultant at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, has expressed serious medical concerns about recurring smoke emissions from a wood-fired pizza business run by the Chawke family in south Dublin.

The comments form part of a third-party planning appeal against the retention and continued operation of a Fired Up wood-fired pizza truck and outdoor seating area in Cornelscourt village.

Doctor Cites Repeated Wood Smoke Exposure and Health Impacts

Local resident Dr Murphy, whose home in Mart Lane, Foxrock is close to the pizza operation, submitted a detailed medical statement to An Coimisiún Pleanála (formerly An Bord Pleanála).

In her submission, the St Vincent’s Hospital consultant states that repeated exposure to wood-fired particulates and smoke emissions is sufficient to cause upper airway irritation and significantly affect the residential enjoyment of nearby homes and gardens.

“The intensity of the smoke impacts varies depending on wind direction and weather conditions,” Dr Murphy noted. “However, there are repeated occasions where smoke accumulates in the back garden and smoke odour enters the dwelling unless windows and doors remain closed.”

Reported Symptoms Linked to Wood-Fired Pizza Smoke

Dr Murphy reported that members of her household have experienced sore throat symptoms and upper airway irritation consistent with smoke exposure. While she acknowledges that isolated incidents may not cause serious harm to healthy individuals, she highlighted the recurring and prolonged nature of the exposure in a residential setting as the primary concern.

Background to the Cornelscourt Planning Appeal

Dublin City Council recently granted a three-year temporary permission for the retention of the self-contained pizza catering truck. The council concluded there would be no significant environmental effects and that the development would not seriously detract from the amenities of the area.

Local resident Niall Melvin has appealed this decision, bringing the health and residential amenity concerns before An Coimisiún Pleanála.

Chawke Family’s Fired Up Pizza Business in South Dublin

The Cornelscourt location is one of four wood-fired pizza operations run and owned by the Chawke family under the Fired Up brand across south Dublin. Publican Charlie Chawke serves as a director alongside Bill Chawke.

The most recent accounts for Chawkes Woodfired Pizza Ltd show strong financial performance, with post-tax profits of €294,568 for the year and accumulated profits of €965,152.

Wood-Fired Pizza Operations and Local Air Quality Concerns

This case highlights growing debates in Ireland around the impact of wood-fired ovens in residential and village settings. Wood smoke contains fine particulates that can affect air quality, particularly when operations are located near homes.
